Issue: Restoring the Natural Look of the "Mighty Mo"
FishAThon - Team Mighty Mo - Recycled Fish

The last dam on the Missouri River is Gavin's Point Dam near Yankton, SD. Behind the dam lays scenic Lewis and Clark Lake, just downstream is the lowest section of non-channelized river that once was the natural look of the "Mighty Mo". Besides declines in some native species of fish due to channelization, the river has also been well populated with invasive species. While these issues are very important, a bit of observation of the banks below the dam will reveal another problem...pollution. Beer cans, fishing line, plastic packaging and a large amount of other garbage lines the shores of perhaps one of the most scenic areas on the river. Littering threatens wildlife, including the local osprey population, it pollutes the water, it's an eyesore and it also reduces angler access due to broken glass and excessive amounts of fishing line in the water and on the bank.

The solution: Our team will be focusing on raising awareness about this issue, helping clean the portion of river directly below the dam and gathering fishing line to be recycled. We would also like to spark local interests in this issue and try to get the community involved.
